Athletic highlights and how you felt when you received them:

Details coming

What are your interests outside of sports? Why do you like them?

A little bit of everything, so I am always challenged: Art (graphic design, film production, writing, drawing, and painting), reading, snowboarding, scuba diving / boating, working out / CrossFit, mountain biking, baking / pastry decoration.

I enjoy all of these activities because they are all intellectually engaging, and require a certain amount of athletic ability, precision, and discipline. I enjoy many of the outdoor activities because they push my limits, and the artistic activities are calming.

Who are your role models and why?

A role model(s) that had a large impact on me were the girls at the CAF (Challenged Athlete Foundation) camp in California where I volunteered over the summer, specifically Nelly Schasfoort. Due to a birth defect, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, she was unable to hit or set with her hands. Despite her disadvantage, she out hustled everyone and worked harder than anyone to master volleyball. Nelly would use her feet and chest to set and pass the ball, and she would even use her head to hit over the net. She taught me that feeling sorry for yourself is never an option, and it’s up to you to push yourself beyond your limits because no one can do it for you.

While I was with the girls I noticed that none of them acted like victims of their impairments, rather they embraced them and used them as tools to work harder and enhance their game. That experience is my motivation for volleyball, and what makes me push my limits on the court.

Involvement in other sports or extracurricular. Why is it important for you?

Water Polo / Swim Team, Track & Field
Provides cardiovascular endurance as well as improving strength training and coordination
Creates strong bonds within a team environment, while still enabling individualized competition.

Academic highlights and how you felt when you received them?

A specific academic award I remember well was when I received A- Honor Roll in fifth grade. I was incredibly excited and surprised since I had recently moved from a different country (Bahrain) and felt like I was behind most of the kids in my class.

Another academic highlight was earning straight A’s for the last 4 years. Which included receiving an A in all my honors Math classes, which is not my strong suit. I struggled with Math most, but I worked consistently on extra-credit and spare practice sheets to get a high grade in the class.

What program would you like to attend in school?

MultiMedia / Media X (graphic design, advertisement, etc.)
Theater / Film (production, tech, etc.)
Business (finance, etc.)

How do you envision your school life in college/university?

Inviting campus with a small-town ‘feel’, with multiple outdoor activity options, (hiking, snowboarding, biking, surfing, etc.). Strong support and community from the volleyball team. Personal relationship with teachers; smaller classes for more individualized / hands-on learning.
