Describe how you work in a team with your partners.

While working in a team, I believe that I am one piece of a large pie. I have a strong bond with my teammates, and I encourage them to be the best they can. I make sure that my teammates know that they can rely on me for support in times of need, and I build strong relationships with each one of them on and off the court. I like to take on the leadership role in team and group situations, but I do so while working alongside my teammates to reach a common goal

Athletic highlights and how you felt when you received them?

  • 2020 Team Ontario Red Indoor (16U)
  • 2020 Team Ontario Beach
  • 2020 MVP Smash Raiders 15U Jr. High-Performance Team
  • 2019 Beach Provincial Champion 13U D1T1
  • 2019 Beach Provincial Bronze Medalist 14U D1T1
  • 2019 Canadian Beach Nationals 5th 14U D1T1
  • 2019 Team Ontario Regional Program Silver Medalist
  • 2019 Indoor Canadian National Silver Medalist 14U D1T1
  • 2019 Indoor Provincial Bronze Medalist 14U D1T1

Each time I’ve had one of these athletic accomplishments, I’ve felt incredibly honored to have such a great partner/team and coaches and that I’ve gotten the opportunity to be the best I can. I have had some great success in volleyball, but I don’t let it go to my head because I know that there is still so much that I can improve on.

Involvement in other sports or extracurriculars. Why is it important for you?

This year due to Covid-19 all sports teams and extracurriculars at school have been cancelled, but last year I was involved in multiple sports teams and clubs including football, basketball, rugby, volleyball, track and field, the activity council, preschool helpers and the global issues group. I believe that being involved in various teams and clubs makes me a more well-rounded person, and allows me to meet people outside of my primary sport.

What are your interests outside of sports? Why do you like them?

I’ve always enjoyed travelling with my family. I love it because it’s a great opportunity to take a break from my busy schedule and spend time with the people I love the most. I really enjoy seeing new places, trying different foods learning about different cultures and lifestyles.

Who are your role models and why?

My role models are Sarah Pavan and Becky Zeeman. Sarah has been my one of my biggest role models since I was a kid because I’ve always related to her in a lot of different ways, and she has succeeded on the world stage in both indoor and beach volleyball–which I also hope to do someday! Becky Zeeman has been my beach coach for the past two seasons. Coach Becky has taught me so much about the game, and has helped me develop not only as an athlete, but as a person.

Academic highlights and how you felt when you received them.

Some of my academic highlights include: 2020 Honour Roll, 2019 Honour Roll and the 2019 Koetsch Stahlschmidt award for the highest average in my class. Receiving these awards, I felt very proud and excited that my hard work had been acknowledged

What program would you like to attend in school?

I haven’t decided what I’d like to study after high school, but I’m potentially interested in health sciences, business or psycholog

How do you envision your school life in college/university?

I envision my time in university to be filled with some of the best experiences of my life! I hope that I can attend a university where I could receive a volleyball scholarship. I’d like to be somewhere where I can find a good balance between volleyball and school. I’m excited to someday be able to play the sport I love, and to study a subject I’m passionate about while being an active and involved member in campus life and the community.

2020 Ontario Volleyball Schedule:

DUE TO COVID-19 ALL TOURNAMENTS POSTPONED

I started playing beach volleyball in 2017 when I was 10 years old. I had just finished playing my first year of competitive volleyball, and the Director of my club suggested that I register for his beach program–he said playing beach volleyball would make me a better indoor player, and he told me I would get lots of touches, move quicker and jump higher. So, I signed up and committed to practicing twice per week and playing in a few tournaments. To my surprise, I really enjoyed beach, and I was starting to get good at it too! I found myself wanting to compete more and more, so I decided to register for 12U Beach Provincials (playing up a year), and we finished 5th in the Province which was really impressive to me because it was my first beach season.

In 2018, I registered for more beach tournaments, and I medaled at every tournament I played in. The more success I had, the more I wanted to play, so I began playing with multiple partners. I discovered that playing with different partners helped me improve on different skills, and that every time I played with someone new, I would have to adjust. I started to really fall in love with beach! At 2018 Provincials, I played up two age divisions and won silver in 14U D1T2. At 2018 Canadian Nationals, I won bronze in 14U D1T2 playing up 2 age divisions.

In the summer of 2019, I played with 11 different partners, and medaled with 10 of them. I started to get really serious about beach volleyball and began to like it even more than indoor. I won 13U D1T1 Provincials (my true age division at the time), and being a Provincial Champion is one of my greatest volleyball accomplishments! I also won bronze playing up in 14U D1T1 Provincials with a partner I had never played with before. Then, at Canadian Nationals I got 5th in 14U D1T1 also playing with a partner I had never played with before.

In the summer of 2020, I made Team Ontario Beach, and I was fortunate enough to train with the best athletes and coaches. Due to COVID-19, official beach volleyball competition in Ontario was cancelled in 2020, but I made the best of things and still really improved my game. I played in beach “Friendlies” with five different female partners, and I played in tons of co-ed tournaments that my friend organized. I competed in GNBV’s Virtual Showcases, and I won silver in the 16U Gold Bracket (playing up two age divisions), and 4th in the 18U Gold Bracket (playing up four age divisions). In the fall of 2020, I was one of only five female athletes selected to the Team Ontario Integrated Program. The Team Ontario Integrated Program allows high performance athletes to split their training time between indoor and beach during the off-season. I love beach volleyball, and I continue to improve every season!

Calinda is a hard-working athlete who does not settle. She is constantly looking to improve to be the best volleyball player she can be. She does not practice to be the top athlete in her age division, but to be the best possible volleyball player. Calinda was invited to train with my NCAA group (Canadian athletes from Toronto/GTA, who are currently enrolled in NCAA institutions), and belonged. It was not a matter of “holding her own” or “proving her ability” to the rest of the group. She rightfully developed and competed amongst top Canadian players
and enjoyed the process of doing so.

Calinda will be an impact player for your program. Please feel free to reach and ask questions, or gather more insight about Calinda as a person and player. She is the future of Canadian volleyball. We are excited to support her during her college experience.

Sophie Bukovec

Lead Coach, The Northern Elite Academy

Calinda demonstrates a desire and determination to be the best volleyball player that she can become, she has all of the physical tools to be an exceptional player at the highest levels, one of her greatest strengths is her work ethic and attention to detail

Calinda’s greatest value is not her physical ability nor is it her tactical knowledge… her greatest value is her personality, she is extremely coachable, loves to see her teammates be successful, and has demonstrated the desire to play whatever role she needs to play in order to make the team better.
