  3. Organized
  4. Friendly
  5. Supportive

Describe how you work in a team with your partners.

In beach volleyball, it’s very important for me to establish great communication with my partner, both before and during a match. I want to ensure that we feel comfortable with each other, and we are both motivating and helping one another to perform at our best.

Athletic highlights and how you felt when you received them.

An athletic highlight for me was to be selected as both the only grade 10 player on my high school senior volleyball team and a member of the starting 6 line-up. This was especially rewarding because we had a very good team, which allowed us to win several tournament medals over the course of the season, and finish in the top 3 regionally.

Involvement in other sports or extra-curricular. Why is it important for you?

I am currently focusing on beach volleyball, however in previous years, I participated in a number of additional sports, including indoor volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, track and field, etc. During the winter, I like to downhill ski, and during the summer, I like to water ski and wake surf. These various sports have allowed me to develop both physically and mentally in various ways.

What are your interests outside of sports? Why do you like them?

Outside of sports, I like to play the piano and visual arts. I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old. I enjoy playing the piano because it relaxes me and I love learning different songs to play on the piano. I also enjoy making other people smile when I play for them.

I have also been painting and drawing since I was very young. I was selected to be part of the Visual and Media Arts Concentration at my high school. Painting and drawing are a big passion of mine. When I’m painting or drawing, I feel like I’m in a different world where I can control whatever I do. I enjoy painting for other people and seeing their reactions and smiles when they see what I’ve painted.

I also started my own business last summer where I paint shoes (Air Force 1’s). I customize these shoes and sell them via an online shop. This business has allowed me to make money while maintaining flexibility to accommodate my beach volleyball training schedule.

Who are your role models and why?

My role model is Melissa Humana-Parades. Melissa is a Canadian defender in beach volleyball, and the current World Champion. She is always smiling on the court, which reminds me of myself. I look up to her and want to work as hard as she does to reach my goals.

Academic highlights and how you felt when you received them.

I have always worked really hard in school, and therefore have been rewarded with a high GPA. My successes in school motivate me to remain focused and get my schoolwork done on time. Getting good grades gives me a sense of accomplishment.

What program would you like to attend in school?

I am currently contemplating kinesiology or marine sciences.

How do you envision your school life in college/university?

I envision my school life in college to be pretty similar to what I am doing right now, but definitively be harder, which I am aware of and ready for. I will have to dedicate many hours in my schoolwork and make sure that I don’t fall behind and not be afraid to ask for help if I need it. It will definitely be a challenge but one that I am ready for. I will be very busy with volleyball and school, but I’m looking forward to this.

I started beach volleyball during the summer of 2017 (13u), and played every summer since. I participated in training camps and tournaments. However, the beach season is very short in Ottawa, and the coaching is limited (emphasis is placed on indoor volleyball). Regardless, during the summer 2018, I was selected to be part of the Ontario Region 6 beach volleyball team (only 6 players selected per region). This gave me the opportunity to participate in a 5-day Ontario Summer Games Training Camp and participate in the Ontario Summer Games, held in London, Ontario.

During the summer of 2019, I attended a 1 week beach volleyball camp at Club Med Academies, in Port St Lucie, Florida. Then in August 2020, because of my love for beach volleyball, I decided I wanted to pursue beach volleyball full time and therefore went to Club Med Academies as a full time student athlete (for grade 11). As a full-time student athlete at Club Med Academies, I participated in 8 beach volleyball training sessions per week (twice a day, 4 times a week). I also did strength training for 1 hour everyday. I played in tournaments almost every weekend, during which I learned a lot and improved incredibly. I came to Florida not knowing much about beach volleyball techniques, having previously focused mostly on indoor volleyball, but by the end of the year, I was part of the elite training group, was selected to represent my club in Club versus Club competitions, and could compete against the top girls. Some key accomplishments in Florida were:

  • Winning a gold medal at a girls 18U tournament in Orlando
  • Qualifying for the East Coast Championships, held in Clearwater Beach, Florida (November 2020)
  • Winning a gold medal at a Club versus Club tournament in Vero Beach
  • Winning a gold medal at a coed tournament in Miami
  • Bronze medal at a girls 18U tournament in Vero Beach
  • Continuously moving up in beach volleyball rankings through-out the year

Since I have been back in Ottawa (for the summer 2021), I have continued with my intense beach volleyball training. I train 4 times per week, with a beach volleyball coach who previously won gold at the Senior Beach Volleyball Ontario Championships, and represented Canada on the FIVB beach volleyball tour. I have also been playing in various tournaments, including youth (won a silver medal at a provincial Quebec 18U tournament) and senior (Women’s Open) tournaments. The senior tournaments are giving me the opportunity to play against some very high-level teams, to continue to improve my game.

I believe that the past year has really helped me prepare for university, including learning to manage a very busy schedule with both volleyball training and school. During the past year, my days would start at 7am and I would get back at 6pm. During that time, I would have 4 hours of school and 5-6 hours of volleyball and strength/conditioning. I have become very disciplined and well organized and I have ensured to always stay on top of my school work.
